*Workshop with Karan Casey (Zoom): Saturday, January 30th, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Workshop details: Folk and Traditional Irish Singing Pedagogy with Karan Casey: “I love songs and would love for people to experience the joy of singing. Singing keeps me steady and safe. Aengus, The god of Love, was reputed to blow out his kisses into the air where they then changed into birds and flew around his head protecting him! I feel the same thing happens with songs, they are a balm and a comfort to me and hopefully by extension, to the people listening or singing along.”  This class is open to participants at all levels and of all ages, regardless of prior singing experience. Songs will be “teased out” during the class, by listening to, learning, and exploring the songs together. Orality, ornamentation and voice placement, along with collecting and sourcing songs, will be discussed.

Karan Casey has long been recognized as one of the most innovative, provocative and imitated voices in Irish traditional and folk music. Singing songs charged with a sense of social responsibility in a career spanning over 25 years, Karan has released 7 solo albums as well as an album for children, a duet album with John Doyle and numerous contributions to other artists’ projects. She has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan, performing with her own band as well as collaborating with a diverse roster of renowned musicians.
